Manual Handling in Childcare settings

Childcare staff can be at high risk of musculoskeletal injuries such as strains or sprains, nerve injuries, hernias, chronic pain or joint injuries due to the type of manual handling tasks required by their role.   Tasks such as setting up outdoor play equipment and bedding equipment for rest time, lifting, carrying and changing young children, and navigating play areas full of small and large obstacles pose significant manual handling hazards.

It is essential to identify, assess and manage these risks through specific and appropriate manual handling training.  Regular review of policies and procedures, and implementation of good work design are required for the safety and well-being of both staff and children in early childcare workplaces.
