Benefits of Workplace Rehabilitation for Employers
When a workplace injury occurs, early and effective support can make a significant difference to the worker, the employer, and the overall claim outcome. Workplace rehabilitation providers help organisations respond quickly, identify suitable duties, reduce barriers to recovery, and support injured workers to remain at work or return safely and sustainably.
For employers, the benefits are practical and measurable. Early intervention can reduce time away from work, improve communication between the worker, doctor, insurer and workplace, and help managers understand what the worker can safely do. This allows organisations to maintain productivity, minimise disruption, and demonstrate a proactive commitment to recovery and wellbeing.
In 2025 SIRA commissioned an independent evaluation which was conducted by Urbis in partnership with Monash University. The study found that Workplace Rehabilitation plays a vital role in helping injured workers recover and return to work, with three in four workers who engage a Rehabilitation Provider achieving a durable return to work. The evaluation also highlighted the importance of early referral, tailored return-to-work planning, experienced consultants and face-to-face service delivery.
For organisations, this means workplace rehabilitation is not just a claims management tool. It is a way to increase workforce participation, support compliance with return-to-work obligations, strengthen employee trust, and reduce the risk of long-term disability or complex claim escalation.
Engaging a workplace rehabilitation provider early gives employers access to expert guidance before problems become harder to resolve. With the right support in place, organisations can create safe and realistic pathways for injured workers to return to / recover at work.
